Early 1900’s Gay Slang a-Go-Go Till Current

This list was created to educate people outside or inside the community of different slang terms used with-in the GLBT community.

Slang terms vary from location, time originated (early 1900’s till current), can mean more than one definition and some evolve into different meanings from the time the slang was created.

  • Bareback: Is a slang term for unprotected sex.
  • Banjee: Is a slang term from the early 1980’s (or before) for Latino or African American youngster that dress in urban clothes (sometimes masculine) and have sex with men.
  • Batty boy (also can be spelled bhatti boy, batty bwoy): Is a Jamaican term used to describe effeminate, gay or bisexual men. The slang term is a Jamaican patois abbreviation of the word bottom, which turned into “batty”. Batty boy is also a cognate of the American English term “butt boy”.
  • Bear: Is the slang term for a hairy usually husky or stocky gay male with a hairy body and facial hair.
  • Beard: Is a slang term describing a person who is (knowingly or unknowingly) used as a date, romantic partner, or spouse either to conceal infidelity ones sexuality. The term can be used both in the heterosexual world and homosexual world. This slang term is increasingly accepted in the LGBT culture, references to beards are usually seen in mainstream TV & movies as well as various forms of entertainment.
  • Beat: Is an Australian slang term used to refer to a certain area frequented by gay men & non gay identifying men, who have sex with other men (MSM), and who are cruising for casual (NSA) sex. This use of the word is a spin off to the “beat” walked by a police officer or a street prostitute. Most common places that are considered “Beat” for gay men, bi, dl (married men) are usually: public toilets, parks, nightclubs, suburban rest area car parks. Researchers have made the conclusion that a considerably large proportion of men who use “beats” are MSMs rather than gay identifying. This is possibly because, while gay men have a ton of different venues for meeting legitimately, MSMs who are often closeted do not want to risk being seen in gay establishments.
  • Breeder: Is the slang term in the homosexual community used to describe a man and woman couple with 1 or more children.
  • Bugchasing: Is a slang term used for someone that is looking to have sex with someone that is infected with HIV/AIDS in order to contract the virus.
  • Bulldagger: Is the slang term for masculine lesbian.
  • Butch and Femme: Is a slang term for masculine & fem traits, behavior, style, expression, self-perception or is commonly used in a lesbian relationship to identify each others role in their relationship.
  • Boi: Is a slang term for younger role in a gay relationship. While the butch male in the relationship is considered the man of the house, boi is still in a freer & younger phase in his life and relationship.
  • Bottom: Is a slang term for the role played in sexual pleasures between two men, bottoms are usually anal or oral in his sexual role.
  • Castro clone: Is a derogatory slang term for a typical/cloning look in San Francisco depending on the era, 1970’s was a different look compared to the 1980’s “Castro Clone” look.
  • Chicken: Is the slang term used by gay men for another young gay male, young in appearance, adolescent youth with an innocent nature to him are all considered “Chicken”.
  • Chicken Hawk: Is a slang term for an older men that appreciate them men younger in age for a relationship, chicken queen and chicken plucker are also slang terms under the “Chicken Hawk” meaning.
  • Cottaging: Is a British slang term used for men that have public anonymous sex in the lavatory/bathroom/restroom.
  • Cruising: Is a slang term for two men that are interested in each other or a section (often in a public area) where gay men go to meet other gay men.
  • Daddy: Is the slang term for an older gay gentleman or the older role in a relationship.
  • Down-low: Is the slang term for a gay man that lives his life as a straight man, married, single and has sex with other men with out anyone suspecting it.
  • Drag: Is the slang term for any costume or clothes that don’t match ones gender.
  • Dyke: Is the slang term for lesbian or lesbianism.
  • Dyke tyke: Is the slang term for a male version of a fag hag, a male that associates himself mostly or exclusively with lesbian women.
  • En femme: Is a slang term mostly used in the transgender community to describe male cross dressers wearing fem clothes or expressing a feminine personality.
  • Fag (Faggot): Is a slang term for homosexual or a effeminate man.
  • Fag hag: Is the slang term for a women that has gay men as friends.
  • Fag stag: Is the slang term for a heterosexual male that enjoys the company or has numerous homosexual friends.
  • Faux queen: Faux queens play with traditional gender roles and gender norms to educate & entertain.
  • Flagging: Is the slang term with-in the hanky code, used between gay men to identify roles such as: Top or Bottom through handkerchiefs put in either the right back pocket or left back pocket.
  • Friend of Dorothy: Is the slang term used by a gay man to figure out if another man is gay.
  • Fruit: Is the slang term for gay or people in the LGBT community in general.
  • Gay for pay: Is the slang term for a porn actor that is heterosexual but takes on gay movies for pay.
  • Gaydar: Is the slang term for someone that can determine someone else gay sexuality without asking or knowing.
  • Gaymer: Is the slang term for gay, lesbian, bi, transgender that are in the video gaming community.
  • Glory hole: Is the slang term for a hole in a wall that is used for sexual activity in a public restroom, buddy booth cubicle or to observe a person in the next bathroom stall.
  • Lesbian until graduation: Is the slang term for a young lesbian in training or experimenting with lesbianism.
  • Lipstick lesbian: Is the slang term for the feminine role as a lesbian or in a lesbian relationship.
  • Party and play: Under the influence while looking to engage in sexual activities.
  • Queen: Is the slang term for a flamboyant or effeminate gay male.
  • Shemale: Is the slang term for a trans women that still has male genitalia.
  • Soft butch: Is the slang term for a woman with short hair, clothing that was designed for a man, who has masculine mannerisms and behaviors.
  • Swish: Is another slang term for nelly, effeminate behavior or interests.
  • Tea-room: Is a slang term for bathroom.
  • Top: Is a slang term for the role played in sexual pleasures between two men, tops are usually serviced in the sexual act.
  • Trade: Is the slang term for a casual partner of a gay man or to have gay partner who is comparatively wealthy.
  • Transfan: Is the slang term for people who are attracted to transgender individuals.
  • Troll: Is the slang term for a gay man that describes another gay man that has sexual encounters with no sexual standards or prefrence.
  • Twink: Is the slang term for a gay young hairless male or a skinny hairless gay man upto his late twenties.
  • U-Haul lesbian: Is the slang term for a stereotypical lesbian relationship.
  • Versatile: Is the slang term for a person that can play either role “Top” or “Bottom” depending on connection or what their sexual drive may be.
