June 24, 2011 marks a major part in our history with marriage equality passing in New York State and in 30 days it will pass into law. So glad we are seeing this in our lifetime and now the waiting game begins till we see it fully go through on July 24, 2011. Congratulations LGBT, this is a major step in the right direction to human rights for all equally.
When we first met back on October 3, 1993 we never even thought of getting married or even thought we would be here 18 years later. But here we are today and marriage is for everyone, gay, lesbian, straight, transgender, bi. Such a special time in New York City.
We heard the news this evening from Joe Fiore while volunteering at the LGBT Center for Fur Pride and the energy was high and the excitement was overwhelming. Happy Pride everyone! Love and let love! Hate doesn’t = Love! Take this day as all days to hug and kiss someone you love and hug a stranger! Love is contagious!
Of course we all know several amendments were made in the final hours to help get the legislation passed.
These are (please pay particular attention to the last one):
The Act states that no religious entity, benevolent organization or not-for-profit corporation that is operated, supervised or controlled by a religious entity, or their employees can be required to perform marriage ceremonies or provide their facilities for marriage ceremonies, consistent with their religious principles.
In addition, religious entities will not be subject to any legal action for refusing marriage ceremonies. The Act will grant equal access to the government-created legal institution of civil marriage while leaving the religious institution of marriage to its own separate and fully autonomous sphere.
Additionally, the Act was amended to include a clause that states that if any part is deemed invalid through the judicial process and after all appeals in the courts, the entire Act would be considered invalid.
Stipulations, always stipulations the LGBT community happiness is always overshadowed by these added rules. So we’ve had a weekend to enjoy the prospect of equal marrigae but come Monday what will that bring to light?
