It appears that there are just a hand full of people who remembers that magnificent time back in the 80s. Though the neighborhood looks the same. Names of places have changed. Equus is now I-Candy. The Kesmon Hotel is now the Alexander Inn,Key West is closed and my favorite place of all Kurtz is long gone.
Going to Cheap Art cafe after the clubs closed on 12th Street and watching all the goings on while eating your meal. Okay the place wasn’t that clean but the action outside was a show in its own! It was a place to go and let loose. The holidays were always the best. People were out ready to party and get down( I hope I am not dating myself with the word get down) I digress. It was just a wonderful time.
Now the gayborhood has become chic and very metropolitan.Which I am still debating whether that’s a good thing or not. It seems like the parties were better and the people were a lot more friendlier. Every now and than I take a stroll down memory lane and you know what it still puts a smile on my face thinking about those days.
Ha! I haven’t thought of Cheap Art Cafe in a minute. What a nasty place…slow service, never a table available, queens fighting outside at 2am and the cockroaches hiding in the plants. In other words, it was amazing! LOL
Yes, the Cheap Art cafe, I believe it went by another name before becoming Cheap Art. If you look at the top of I-Candy there is a name on top of it edged in letters. Way before it was Equss it went by another name. I too remember the days of Kurts, Key West and Equus. Though I am a female I partied EVERYWHERE! LOL. I have to agree with you the parties and people were loads fun. The excitement(mainly from the prostitutes outside of Cheap Art were great to watch) How I miss those days:(
