First opened in 1840 as a grocery store it became a bar in 1864 and has continued to function as that for over 130 years. Lenny sold off the Spike to Charles Thompson (CT), Ed Clifton (Charles Thompson’s – CT’s Lover), Ken Kyser, and Al Cataldo. The Mattachine Society founded in 1950 (probably second to Chicago’s lived Society For Human Rights founded in 1924) , the Daughters OF Bilitis founded in 1955, The Society For Individual Rights (SIR) founded in 1964.
