Transgender Community, MTF, FTM, They’re Everywhere

Individuals on this list have been chosen because of their fame or notoriety is in some way due to their transgender identity or presence. The individuals listed below also include notes of their nationality and their main career specialty, especially if the individual person is known for other than their transgender identity.

It is usually very hard to identify the gender and sexual identity of those individuals who lived before the 20th century, since most of the modern concepts of MTF (male to female) and FTM (female to male) were not developed until the second half of the century.

In most countries outside of America and ancient or medieval societies, transgender people are considered a different gender in itself that is different from both “men” and “women”. Most of the time transgender people are often described as a third gender in these societies. There is no concept of “homosexuality”, “heterosexuality” or “” in these non Western groups, and gender classification is the only criteria for determining identities of individuals.

These non Western, ancient and medieval societies traditionally have separate social spaces for transgender people, which is separate from both men and women social spaces. A few of the people listed below crossdressed during wartime for various reasons. With that said, transgender people are by definition not “transvestites” or “drag performers” because they do not live or identify their gender as being opposite of their sex assigned at birth consistently in their lives daily.

Middle America or the world for that matter, would have to be really closed minded or that much in denial to think that the transgender community hasn’t made any contributions to our history. If you look at individuals as humans without any titles or gender classification, we will see that everyone serves purpose.
