I believe it was well over 10 years ago when I first met Lloyd, I was always fascinated by this diminutive chap that was always dressed to the nines in his leather regalia. Lloyd would arrive every Saturday night by midnight like clockwork and always held court on the second floor corner nook of the Eagle NYC bar on a stool that was always available to him; however, if his stool was taken or unavailable? it would always be provided.
Lloyd was semi-retired, worked as concierge part time at a boutique hotel in midtown, the name escapes me unfortunately. He always ensured that his work schedule worked around his Eagle schedule.
Lloyd was of Puerto Rican descent, he was well versed and always filled with marvelous stories. His birthday was August 7th and I always made certain to advise the Eagle mgt to kindly provide a cake, but, through the years, it was simply made a tradition. Every time I arrived and saw Lloyd in his favorite corner stool, I always greeted him with a salute and made sure to buy him his next drink, then I would saunter over to him, kiss him on the cheek and complement him on how gorgeous he looked. Lloyd would always blush, chuckled in his own giddy way, place his grabby hand firmly on my ass and pat me hello in return.
In the later years as he approached his late 70′s, old man time was not being gracious to Lloyd since he suffered from arthritic knees and on several occasions slipped down the stairwell as he made his way down by early morning. Lloyd was indomitable and brushed himself off and sauntered along, but, after a few spills ? we always made sure to escort him down the 20 steps to the 1st floor.
In the past few months, I sadly noticed that Lloyd was not around so I basically came to the ultimate conclusion that old age had finally won… Bette Davis once said that “old age ain’t for sissies” … She was most correct.
When I learned from Frank Peper, a fellow dear patron of Eagle-NYC, that we lost Lloyd about two weeks ago, I became quite saddened and started to work the Eagle crowd of this sad news that was inevitable.
Some day when I decide to grow up? I want to be as elegant and cordial as Lloyd Kerr… dear Lloyd… may you always rest in peace at that Big Eagle Bar up there in that big vast sky. I hope you will haunt us, swing by because you will always be missed and treasured… God Bless You dear Chairman of Leather. Courtesy of our good friend Chris B. , Thank you.
